Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies)

Communication Studies is one of the most exciting, and rapidly evolving, areas of study in today's media driven world. What we know of the world and how we can act in it is critically related to the use of technologies of communication, from spoken language and written text to images on a screen or even avatars on the Web.

The Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies) degree combines a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of Communication together with strong discipline-based training in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Core units in the degree combine theoretical knowledge with the development of practical communication skills, including the use of the latest digital multimedia technology.

This advanced standing course is unique in design as its curriculum allows current practitioners as well as professionals from diverse disciplines to undertake formal undergraduate studies in the area of Communication.

Programme Structure

  • This programme consists of 16 units
  • There are 4 semesters in a year
  • Students will attempt 2 units per semester
  • The 2 units are taught concurrently in each semester by University faculty and are supported with additional tutorials led by local lecturers.

Students undertaking this degree will also enjoy an interactive teaching, lab-oriented learning and well-designed curriculum provide a total learning experience with includes a range of digital media production skills, and also how to use audiovisual equipment and editing software.

Duration

The entire programme can be completed within a minimum period of 2 years.

Assessment and Examination

Students are given a module outline at the commencement of each units. The outline provides the assessment mode and weightings for the unit. Most units have several points of assessments, which may include a mixture of individual and group papers, essays and examinations. Not all units are examinable.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for The University of Western Australia’s Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies) degree are:

  • Local Polytechnic Diploma, with average B/C grades or with graduation GPA of 2.3 or better, OR, 
  • An Advanced/Higher Diploma in a related discipline may also be considered for entry on a case-by-case basis

Language Proficiency

Please note that all students must also meet the following minimum English proficiency requirements:

  • C6 or better for GCE ‘O’ Level; or
  • A TOEFL score of 570 (paper-based test) with a score of 4.5 in the TWE; or
  • A TOEFL score of 230 (computer-based test) with a score of 4.5 in the TWE; or
  • A TOEFL score of 90 (internet-based test) with a minimum score of 22 in Writing, and a score no less than 20 in the other sections; or
  • An IELTS score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0; or
  • ‘C’ grade for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English
