Life Sciences is more than just test-tubes and men in white coats. It is a fascinating multi-disciplinary field of study which involves exciting research, designing and executing groundbreaking experiments to perhaps develop new products (medicines, perfumes, even new types of foods) and processes.

The Foundation Diploma in Life Sciences programme bridges the gap for students who do  not have sufficiencent background in Science but wish to  embark on tertairy  studies in Life Sciences. This programme aims to instil a firm foundation in the basic knowledge of Life Sciences, while developing the students’ ability to think clearly and to express their ideas, whether verbally or in writing, with clarity and logic. The modules offered in this programme differ qualitatively from traditional biology, chemistry and mathematics, both in terms of teaching approach and the quality of time spent in the laboratory.

At the end of this programme, students will be able to:

• Obtain a sound basis in chemistry, biology and mathematics to non Life Sciences trained individuals who wish to pursue further studies within a the Life Sciences and Biotechnology
• Support management professionals (especially those from related industries) who recognise the benefits of acquiring an understanding of the Life Sciences
• Prepared for new career opportunities as they emerge from the Life Sciences and Biotechnology sectors

Progression Pathway

Upon successful completion of this programme, graduates can advance on to a Bachelor of Science degree, awarded by the University of Western Australia, and choose from a suite of majors in:

• Biomedical Science
• Chemistry
• Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
• Pharmaceutical Science

Course Structure

This course consists of 3 modules, amounting to a total of 413 contact hours for the part-time pathway.

• Chemistry of Life

The delivery of modules may not follow the sequence as shown and is subject to change.

Duration

The course is delivered over 12 months for the part-time pathway.

Assessment and Examination

At the commencement of each module, students will be provided the assessment mode and weightings for the module.  Most modules have several points of assessment, which may include assignments, tests, projects and final examinations.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements are:

• 5 GCE 'O' Level passes or equivalent, including English and with at least a Grade 4 in Maths

Applicants who do not meet the above requirements may also apply, but will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
