Bachelor of Science (Pharmaceutical Science) Awarded by The University of Western Australia Do you know the difference between a pharmaceutical scientist and a pharmacist? Both work with drugs, albeit in different ways. Drugs used in the treatment of diseases, that is. In a nutshell, pharmaceutical scientists design new drug forms. When the drugs are ready to be introduced to the market, you will find pharmacists dispensing the drugs at the pharmacies. The content of the Pharmaceutical Science degree reflects the cross-disciplinary nature of therapeutic drug discovery, development and analysis. At all levels throughout the programme exists a strong chemistry component, which parallels the essential role of chemistry in the pharmaceutical industry. A solid introduction to the biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology and genetics of humans and pathogens is provided as a backdrop for understanding human disease, drug action and the principles of drug design. Many facets of pharmaceutical development are covered, including drug discovery and optimisation (medicinal chemistry); pharmaceutical formulation, manufacture and quality control; and clinical trials and applications.
