The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a professional doctorate designed for research-oriented individuals working management positions in business, public services and non-profit organisations. Course Structure

  • The DBA consists of 2 stages
  • Stage 1 consists of the course work component and stage 2, the thesis component

Course Outline


Stage 1: Master of Business Research (Coursework component)
Stage 1 (Year 1) of the DBA comprises the Master of Business Research (MBR). It is a coursework degree, designed to teach advanced research methods. Upon successful completion, candidates will be awarded the MBR degree.

Students require a minimum mark of 65% in each of the following units to be admitted to Stage 2 of the DBA programme:

  • Business Research: Principles and Processes
  • Qualitative Methods in Business Research
  • Quantitative Methods in Business Research
  • Literature Review and Criticism
  • DBA Proposal and Defence

Stage 2: Doctoral Thesis (Thesis Component)
The thesis will normally focus on a topical and apparent management issue and is expected to make a significant contribution to an understanding of management knowledge and practice.

Upon satisfactory completion of the thesis, candidates may opt to have their work examined at PhD level. Such request will be subject to approval by the GSM.

Duration

The minimum required duration to complete this course is 4 years.

Assessment and Examinations

 Students are assessed based on the course work component and the thesis component.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements are:

  • an undergraduate degree from UWA or another approved institution in the field of commerce or a cognate area; or
  • a postgraduate qualification in the area of management; and
  • substantial and appropriate professional experience.; and
  • a pass in any test prescribed by the faculty.

For international applicants whom English is not a native language or whose first degree was not taught in English must have an acceptable level of competency in English such as a TOEFL score of 570 or IELTS of 6.5.

All applicants must submit, together with their application, a 5 to 6 page summary of their proposed area of research, outlining why they are interested in this area and how they might undertake the research.
