Tell us more about your student club.

PSB Academy’s IPRS & Media Club is a part of the governing body of Institute of Public Relations of Singapore (IPRS). As a student chapter, we try to organise events that interlink with a student’s interest but most importantly, we also work on creating networks outside of PSB Academy.

Our networking events include IPRS Get-Together session at Autobahn Motors Singapore, Brunch by the Gardens and outreach activities. The student chapter provides opportunities and platforms to engage our members in interactive activities, in both formal and informal settings.

The event that I personally enjoyed was the IPRS Get-Together session, where PSBA IPRS & Media Club was invited to attend. At the event, our student chapter pitched various ideas to guests and students from different universities.

I was the spokesperson for our club and delivered a 3-4 minutes presentation showcasing our past work and vision for the coming years. I strongly believe that the Get-Together session created a strong impact on me since I had to interact with different people as a committee member, and that was the first time I understood the meaning of networking and getting out of my cocoon of shyness.

As the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the world and students transitioned from physical classes to virtual learning at home, what are some of the e-engagements or e-activities PSBA IPRS & Media Club came up with in order to ensure the continuous outreach and engagement with the students?

PSBA IPRS & Media Club came up with different activities including the Meme Challenge. Many of us understand the true potential of memes on how they are able to narrate a story in a comical manner. During the COVID-19 pandemic, most of us are reading the news that are serious and may cause negative emotions due to this global crisis.  So, we thought of doing something different and with a pinch of comedy on our Instagram page to lift the spirits of our audience.

Some of the other activities that are currently in the works are interview sessions with different media and PR practitioners to re-enforce our vision. These interviews will be oriented towards educational purposes, but more importantly, practical education that all students should be familiar with at college level.

We’ve heard you have set up a podcast! Can you tell us what this podcast is about? How did the experience and exposure gained from PSBA IPRS & Media Club help you set up this podcast?

In this time of pandemic, the podcast was like a way for me to be productive and to do something that I love from the bottom of my heart – which is taking interviews and delivering speeches.

My podcast is also oriented towards practical education, where I call upon entrepreneurs, investors, journalists, podcasters, authors, comedians, chiefs, and ask them about their journeys and setbacks. Most importantly, the interviews also inform the listeners on how entrepreneurship has changed. It is not just about pleasing your investors and the value of money, but also about supporting your passion. The other monetary aspects follow as soon as you discover yourself and start living your dream.

PSBA IPRS & Media Club taught me the importance of learning from failures and continuing to dream big. The student chapter has also played a role in developing my podcast.

Share some words with current students as to why they should join a student club.

College is the time where students truly start embracing a journey of finding themselves and understanding their strengths. Often, we fail and I’m not going to sugarcoat it – failure sucks. That is why student clubs are important because no matter how many times you fail, they will always have room for you. The members are there to help you and no one will judge you.

Student clubs will always have opportunities for you. These opportunities will also help you navigate your way in college and help you discover what you are good at. If you enjoy singing, there is Music Club. If you want to explore dancing, there is Dance Club. If you think you are good in public speaking and networking, PSBA IPRS & Media Club is right here waiting for you! Think of these clubs as a runway where you can go as fast as you can, so that one day you are able to fly to your dreams.
