We understand that you completed the A-levels previously. What made you choose to study with a Private Education Institute instead of an autonomous university?

I chose the private education route as I wanted a degree programme that meets my needs — a quality education from a reputable school and be able to graduate faster than my peers.

How did you find out about The University of Newcastle, Australia (UON)?

After completing A-levels, I was contemplating which private institution to enter, and that was when my friend introduced me to UON. After doing my own research, I found out that UON is one of the Top 10 University in Australia and the 2-year course duration was the right fit. In addition, the accounting degree provides several paper exemptions for professional accounting body such as ACCA.

How have you benefited from the course (in your job or other areas of life)?

The assignments and activities in class have trained me to think independently, voice out my views for discussion, and develop my interpersonal skills. During the 2 years, not only did I gain knowledge and relevant skillsets, I also had the opportunity to forge friendships with my classmates from all over the world. Having classmates from diverse backgrounds gave me a chance to learn about their unique cultures, which helped me in my current job when I work with colleagues from different cultures.

Were there any modules that helped you in your current job?

Initially, I thought that only accounting-related modules would benefit my career. However, after entering the workforce, I realised that the management-related modules were equally important. The theories on various leadership styles and behavioural patterns have helped me to understand different behaviours at work.

Briefly share on your learning experience with UON.

My overall learning experience with UON was positive. The lecturers from UON were passionate and dedicated, they went the extra mile to go through the course materials with me. Be it after class or through email/WhatsApp, I could always reach out to them. I would like to especially thank Mr Edgar Wong, Dr Himani Grover & Dr James Kwan for their dedication and guidance throughout my 2 years with UON.

The UON lesson structure was good as it consists of tests, assignments, and examination. It is less stressful for me, as it reduces the stress of having to cramp everything I have learnt, for a final examination. On the other hand, it also meant that I had to be consistent with my studies such as completing my assignments on time and studying for class tests.

How did you manage your time studying and personal commitments, and yet still was able to do well?

As a private tutor, I have to give tuition on a weekly basis. It is no easy feat to juggle between school and my personal commitments, especially during exam period. However, my tutees’ parents were understanding and allowed me to take a week or two, to prepare for my exams, and my lecturers gave me a lot of encouragement and support along the way.

There were ups and downs during my 2-year journey with UON, especially the period when my grandmother passed away. At that point, I felt like I was just going through the motions of attending school, conducting tuition and even looking like I was handling my life well, but it was one of the lowest points of my life. However, with a promise made to my late grandmother, to not only graduate but also excel in my studies, she became my biggest motivation to pick myself up. Today, not only have I graduated, but I’ve also received the Indrani Dasgupta Memorial Student Excellence Award.

I am grateful to UON, my peers and lecturers for all the opportunities and kindness rendered to me over the past few years. I will hold these beautiful memories close to heart.
