Where are you currently working at now and what are your roles and responsibilities?

I am presently employed at Best World International, a health and wellness company headquartered in Singapore, where I hold the position of Cyber Security Specialist. In this role, my primary responsibilities encompass various aspects of cyber security. This includes active involvement in forensic analysis of malware, security risk management, data protection compliance, and overseeing security operations.

What were the questions/doubts about Cyber Security that this programme managed to clear up?

The Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security offered by Edith Cowan University equips students with knowledge about different forms of cyber attacks and the methods used by cybercriminals to infiltrate security systems. The program provides training in developing and implementing robust security strategies to safeguard organisations from various cyber threats, such as risk assessment, incident response, and vulnerability management.

Moreover, the course covers technical aspects of cyber security, including network security and cryptography. This enables students to learn how to secure networks from unauthorised access, identify and respond to security breaches, and utilize cryptographic methods to protect sensitive data.

Were there any modules that helped you in you career?

The modules offered in the course provide a comprehensive range of knowledge and skills that are highly relevant to my career as a Cyber Security Specialist. One notable module is Cyber Security Incident Detection and Response. This module focuses on techniques and tools for detecting, analysing, and responding to cyber security incidents. I have gained knowledge about incident response frameworks, security monitoring, and incident handling procedures. These skills are essential in swiftly identifying and containing security breaches, minimising the impact on organissational systems.

Additionally, the Ethical Hacking and Defense module has been instrumental in providing insights into the mindset and techniques of ethical hackers. I have learned how to identify vulnerabilities, conduct penetration testing, and develop effective defense strategies. This course has equipped me with the ability to proactively assess and enhance the security posture of organisational systems.

Furthermore, the IoT and OT Security module has addressed the unique security challenges posed by the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) and Operational Technology (OT). I have gained knowledge in securing IoT devices, mitigating risks in OT environments, and implementing defense mechanisms to safeguard critical infrastructure.

These modules have significantly contributed to my skill set and prepared me to tackle the complex security issues prevalent in today’s digital landscape. With the knowledge and practical expertise gained from these modules, I am well-equipped to address and mitigate cyber threats, ensuring the security and integrity of organisational systems and critical assets.

What types of threats do you most commonly see in your work?

Cybersecurity threats are diverse and can affect both individuals and organizations. Phishing attacks, malware infections, and denial-of-service attacks are among the most prevalent, and they can have serious consequences such as data theft, financial loss, reputational damage, and business disruption. It is essential for individuals and organisations to remain vigilant about these risks and take proactive steps to prevent them. One approach is to implement effective security controls and keep software and systems up-to-date to stay ahead of emerging threats.

In what ways have your education with us added value to your personal development and professional opportunities?

There are several ways for cybersecurity experts to stay knowledgeable about the latest threats and best practices. They can attend industry conferences and events, read industry publications, follow cybersecurity experts and organisations on social media, participate in online forums, and pursue continuous education and training. Additionally, some cybersecurity firms and organisations offer threat intelligence feeds and alerts that provide real-time updates on new threats and vulnerabilities. Keeping up-to-date with the latest trends and threats is crucial for cybersecurity professionals to effectively safeguard their clients and organisations.

What made you embark on Cyber Security? How did this programme help you to make a difference in your workplace/industry?

A Cyber Security program can serve as an excellent starting point for individuals interested in pursuing a career in cybersecurity. It provides students with a solid foundation of knowledge in various areas of cybersecurity, including network security, cryptography, risk management, and incident response. By developing expertise in these areas, graduates are better equipped to identify and mitigate cyber threats and vulnerabilities within organisations or for their clients.

For me personally, the increasing prevalence of cyber attacks and the critical need for cybersecurity professionals to protect organisations and individuals from these threats were key motivations behind my decision to pursue a degree in Cyber Security. This program has equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge to make a significant impact in the industry. It has helped me develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as effective communication abilities with diverse stakeholders.

By applying the knowledge and skills acquired through this program, I am now better prepared to protect sensitive information, ensure business continuity, and defend against potential cyber threats. Additionally, the program has opened up a wide range of employment opportunities across industries such as healthcare, finance, government, and technology, among others. This allows me to contribute meaningfully to the field of Cyber Security and make a positive difference in securing our digital world.
