Are you interested in studying sports and exercise science to complement your profession in the health and fitness industry, but don’t have the time to take a full-time diploma or degree course? Or perhaps you are a layperson who is keen to learn more about sports science to help others improve their fitness and prevent injuries, or simply for your own benefit?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above questions, then our Sports and Exercise Science short courses may be for you! We offer a range of courses from sports massage to an internationally recognised personal training certification. The duration for these courses ranges from a few hours to a few days.

Fundamentals of Sport Massage Therapy
If you are currently or considering working with individuals that train regularly, want to avoid injuries, and need help relaxing after a workout or sporting activity, you may want to consider signing up for our Fundamentals of Sport Massage Therapy course. Numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of sports massage in maximizing performance through an improvement in the range of motion, as well as, facilitating recovery by reducing muscle soreness that is commonly experienced following a strenuous activity1.

During this 3-day course, you will learn the various massaging movements appropriate for the different body parts and the best time (i.e., before or after training) to administer these massage movements. Individuals in the fitness and wellness industry may find this beneficial as they will learn how to assess muscle tightness and find an effective massage technique to release the muscle tightness and improve client’s flexibility.

Fundamentals of Active Rolling Tratac
In this 4-hour workshop, you will get a hands-on experience in operating a special massage equipment called Tratac – a “peanut roller” with added vibration technology of varying rates! Additionally, you will gain understanding on the rationale behind the application of self-myofascial release (SMR) and osteofascial release (OFR) which are the two techniques typically used with an Activeball Tratac equipment. This portable and versatile piece of equipment is suited for a wide range of population and can be used in an array of settings such as the home, the gym and rehabilitation clinics to help relieve muscle pain and aches. For those who are looking to maintain their health and fitness certifications such as ACE or NASM, this course is also eligible for gaining of Continuing Education Credits (CEC) points.

Self-Myofascial Release – Triggerpoint (Level 1, 2, 3)
This course teaches you the techniques of self-myofascial release (SMR), which is a form of tool- assisted, self-massage that is used to help with muscle and joint pain. It involves learning to use a tool called Triggerpoint, which is a form roller for relieving certain areas of pain. You will learn how to use the tool for treating immobile or painful skeletal muscles by relaxing contracted muscles, improving circulation of blood, oxygen and lymphatic system, and stimulating the stretch reflex in muscles.

There are 3 levels for this course: the first level (4 hours) introduces you to foam rolling techniques, the basics of SMR and methodology of Triggerpoint. The second level (8 hours) includes the key anatomical points for myofascial release, functionality of movement, scenario-based training, assessment, and coaching and cueing techniques. The third level (4 hours) includes advanced techniques for SMR and equips you to do consultation and conduct lessons to coach others on how to do proper foam rolling with the tool.

To sum it up, you will benefit from the course by gaining a practical understanding with hands-on experience coaching and curing movements, which are scaled to all levels of general and athletic clients for pre- and post-workout foam rolling. You will also be able to coach your clients on the respective locations of SMR based on simple assessments of muscle tightness. Individuals who are looking to maintain their current health and fitness certifications such as ACE or NASM may also consider applying for this course as CEC points will also be awarded to them upon completion.

ACE Certified Personal Trainer Course
This course prepares you to become a certified personal trainer. Certified by the American Council of Exercise (ACE), it teaches you how to implement a safe and effective exercise training programme for your clients. Having the ACE certification not only qualifies you to become a personal trainer, but also gives you better job opportunities, which include workout developer, gym manager, nutrition coach, group exercise instructor, and specialist trainer for private clients such as athletes.

Covering topics such as fitness, physiology and nutrition, the course equips you to help others develop a healthy lifestyle through a proper diet and exercise regime as well as prevent injuries commonly sustained in physical activities. For example, you can help “weekend warriors”, who only participate in a sport or physical exercise in their spare time, to become fit and prevent injuries, as they tend to over-strain their muscles due to a lack of proper conditioning of their body to adapt to the rigours of the physical activities.

This course is not just about fitness, nutrition and sports injury prevention. Using both theories and case studies, it guides you in communicating and building rapport with clients, as well as recommending exercises that promote their stability and functional movement.

The total course duration is 4 days (8 hours per day) of classroom lessons plus 18 online hours. Once you pass Personal Trainer Certification Exam by ACE, you will earn a 2-year renewable certification. The total course duration is 4 days (8 hours per day) of classroom lessons plus 18 online hours.
The ACE course content also happens to be embedded within our diploma course. Hence, if you decide to study our Sport Science diploma, you won’t need to attend the stand-alone ACE Certified Personal Trainer course.
