“Every day is a new opportunity.” – Jay

How has the graduate employability preparation conducted by PSB Academy’s Career Services team prepared you for an internship interview at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore?

Programmes such as the mock interview session has given me a good idea of how to prepare for and handle actual interview questions. The feedback from the mock interview helped me the most as career coaches, Mr Darren Tan and Ms Falilah Mohamed, highlighted to us about our body posture and language during interviews that are visible to others. This is especially when we are nervous, which I took note of and it helped me during my actual interview. In addition to that, I was also provided with opportunities to attend career preparatory workshops, industry visits and recruitment talks.

How was it like working at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore?

It was a great experience, I learnt a great deal about restaurant operations, the hotel’s service standards, and met a lot of passionate individuals (my colleagues) whom I now call my friends. Every day was a new opportunity to delight our guests.

How has the internship experience help prepared you for the corporate world?

My internship has shown me what working in the hospitality/service industry would be like. It has taught me to be more flexible, respond to the situation at hand calmly and swiftly as well as the importance of teamwork, which is essential in the hospitality industry. This has helped me be better prepare for a full-time role in this industry after my internship. I believe that this has set a good foundation in my hospitality career ahead.

What advice do you have for your Diploma in Global Hospitality Management (DGHM) juniors before they embark on their internship journey?

Go in with an open mind and always ask questions instead of assuming. Know that it’s okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from them. Remember to always be courteous and polite to everyone you interact with. These are very important qualities for a hotelier!

Was there anything that you have learnt about crisis management through COVID-19?

I learnt about the measures that the hospitality industry would take to ensure the well-being of guests and employees during the COVID-19 period. They responded swiftly to adhere to the rules set by the government. Hence, this experience has helped me to learn how to deal with crisis management and adapt to changes.
