School of Business and Management

Vasuki Subramaniam, an alumna of PSB Academy, graduated in 2019 with a Business and Marketing degree from Coventry University. Currently an Assistant Human Resource Manager at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Vasuki handles the payroll and other HR affairs at NTU.

Recounting her student life, Vasuki shares with us why she chose PSB Academy, student journey, and career success.

Choosing to Study with PSB Academy

Even though I graduated from Coventry University at PSB Academy in 2019, my student journey with PSB Academy started way back. I took the Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management at PSB Academy in 2001 when the school was still located at Bukit Merah prior to moving to Toa Payoh.

Be it pursuing my diploma or degree studies, I wanted to gain job satisfaction and the relevant knowledge that will allow me to keep up with the fast-evolving corporate world.

Recounting my PSB Academy Experience

I do miss attending classes, greeting the lectures, and my classmates. Lessons have always been enjoyable and interactive. The many group discussions and projects have allowed us to share our ideas freely, and the multiple class presentations have also built my confidence along the way.

During my business and marketing degree course, I learned about accounting for business managers, digital marketing, marketing research, and responsible business strategy and understand how they are being applied in today’s business world. I’ve picked up many practical knowledge and skillsets along the way where I was able to apply it to my current role as I handle payroll, update the staff on the Covid-19 situation daily, and other HR affairs.

It wasn’t sunshine and rainbows throughout my student journey. Juggling my full-time job and part-time studies together with other commitments was not an easy feat. Coupled with the fact that my office is in the west, travelling to campus was tiring. But with sheer determination, I finally graduated in 2019!

Beyond the Four Walls of Classrooms

As a student, I’ve gained invaluable lessons. These values still stuck with me even till today:

  • Forward Thinking – Be future-ready, innovative, and proactive
  • Passion – To help my co-staff achieve their best
  • Excellence – Embrace the power of teamwork and customer engagement to deliver results

My classmates turned friends is also one of my many treasured moments. To date, we would still catch up monthly to share about our life, work and reminisce the times we were in PSB Academy.

Learning Never Stops

Two years after graduating, I am now setting my sights on a master’s degree. Considering today’s competitive business world, it is necessary for me to continuously explore the latest business trends, apply the newest management tools and techniques, and hone my leadership skills. As someone who prefers assignments over exams, Coventry University’s MBA caught my attention. The course is fully-assignment based and consists of a final project. While physical classes are held mostly on weekends and one weekday, there are also recorded and readily accessible online. This provides flexibility for busy working professionals like me to catch up on lessons. I’m excited to embark on my student journey with PSB Academy again in July and looking forward to bring back the knowledge and skillsets to my workplace.

Proud Alumna of PSB Academy

Looking back, PSB Academy has come a long way. When I was still studying as a Diploma student, the campus at Bukit Merah was not as modern. Lecturers still had to rely on the whiteboard to conduct their lessons. But when I took my degree at the City Campus at Marina Square, I was in awe. They have writable walls around the classrooms, a well-equipped Learning Resource Centre, and a beautiful-looking campus. As technology advances, PSB Academy did not lag but instead strives to provide the best learning environment to groom students who will be competitive in today’s corporate world.

Knowing that PSB Academy offers quality education, my cousin, Sivagamy Subramaniam, has also completed her HRM course at PSB Academy. Despite being pregnant when she was studying, it didn’t deter her from completing the course.

Attributing part of my current career success to PSB Academy, I am grateful that the school has groomed and brought out the talent. Today, I can proudly say I’ve showcased my competency at work for delivering customer focus, collaboration, and command respect with the stakeholders.

While there were significant changes to my overall learning journey as a Diploma student and Degree student, I feel proud to witness PSB Academy’s growth. I am also thankful that despite a 15-year gap in my studies, PSB Academy still took me in and offered study rebates to ex-students.
