Phyllis Tan

Class of 2026
School of Business and Management

The MBA programme aligned well with both my professional goals and work commitments, giving me the confidence to take the next step. After more than 30 years in the electronics manufacturing industry, I felt it was the right time to challenge myself by pursuing higher education. While I had gained extensive practical experience, I was keen to broaden my business knowledge and develop a deeper understanding of today’s evolving business landscape.

Returning to studies after such a long time was not without its challenges. I wondered whether I would be able to cope with university life again, but those concerns quickly faded. The lecturers were patient and always willing to help whenever I had questions. I also benefited greatly from learning alongside my classmates, whose diverse backgrounds and experiences brought valuable perspectives to the overall learning experience.

The assignments were closely related to real business situations, which made the learning immediately relevant. I often used examples from the electronics manufacturing industry, allowing me to reflect on challenges I had encountered throughout my career. Analysing the growth strategy of my previous company using different business frameworks was especially meaningful, as it gave me a new way of looking at familiar business decisions.

Managing work and studies required careful planning, especially when overseas business trips coincided with classes. Being able to join lessons online or catch up through recorded sessions helped me stay on track without falling behind. The flexibility of the programme, together with the support from the lecturers, made it possible to balance both responsibilities.

In my current role in Business Development, I have been able to apply many of the concepts covered in the MBA. The programme has helped me evaluate business opportunities more strategically by looking beyond short-term gains and considering long-term value, business fit and sustainable growth.

If you're thinking about pursuing an MBA, don't wait until you feel there is a "perfect" time. It takes commitment, but the experience is worthwhile. Beyond the knowledge gained in class, you'll also have the opportunity to learn from classmates with different professional backgrounds, which is just as valuable as the lessons themselves.

This journey reminded me that learning never stops. For me, the MBA wasn't simply about earning another qualification—it was about continuing to grow, both personally and professionally. Growth has no finish line.
