Connecting Industry Experience with Academic Knowledge
After more than 25 years in the built environment industry, I decided to pursue the BSc (Hons) in Construction Management with Coventry University at PSB Academy to strengthen the academic foundation behind my professional experience.
Having worked across construction, interior fit-out, healthcare facilities, BIM and engineering consultancy, I wanted to broaden my understanding beyond project execution and gain a stronger perspective on management, planning and business decision-making.
I first discovered PSB Academy and Coventry University while researching Construction Management programmes online. When I reached out for more information, Ms Janice Cheong walked me through the programme in detail, and the experience was excellent. What stood out to me was the opportunity to earn a Coventry University qualification in Singapore while continuing my career. The direct entry into Year 3 through module exemptions was also a major advantage, as it recognised my prior learning and experience.
The curriculum gave me the opportunity to connect what I had experienced in the workplace with structured academic knowledge. Modules such as Construction Project Management, Contract Management, and Sustainability and Innovation in Construction helped me look at projects from a broader perspective — considering factors such as cost, risk, resources, stakeholder expectations and long-term impact.
One of the most valuable aspects of the programme was being able to reflect on situations I had encountered at work and examine them through an academic lens. This strengthened my professional judgement and gave me a more structured approach to decision-making.
The lecturers also made a strong impression on me. Ms Ameline Ho, in particular, stood out for her knowledge, dedication and genuine care for her students. Her emphasis on connecting theory with practical application has stayed with me throughout my professional journey and has even influenced my own approach as an adjunct lecturer.
Today, as a General Manager (Commercial), I work across business development, strategic partnerships and engineering consultancy, particularly within the growing data centre sector. My career has continued to evolve alongside the industry, and I believe continuous learning is essential to staying relevant.
My experience at Coventry University reinforced an important belief for me: "Education creates opportunities, experience builds confidence, and continuous learning helps us remain relevant."
