1. Could you tell us about your current position at Far East Hospitality and what a typical day looks like for you?
I am currently working as a Guest Service Executive at Village Hotel Bugis under Far East Hospitality Management Pte. Ltd. My role involves ensuring that guests have a smooth and pleasant experience throughout their stay. On a typical day, I handle check-ins and check-outs, respond to guest inquiries and complaints, post laundry charges, and coordinate with departments such as Engineering and Housekeeping to ensure that guest requests and concerns are addressed promptly. Every day is different, which makes the job both exciting and rewarding.
2. How did the industry visit organised by Career Services Team play a role in helping you land your role at Far East Hospitality?
The industry visit organised by the Career Services Team played a significant role in helping me secure my position. During the visit, I had the opportunity to connect with the HR team and take note of their contact details. When I later applied for the role, one of the HR representatives recognised my name from the industry visit, which helped create a positive impression. It demonstrated the value of networking and taking advantage of opportunities provided by the school.
3. Since entering the hospitality field, what challenges have you encountered, and how have these experiences helped you grow professionally?
One of the biggest challenges in hospitality is managing different guest expectations while maintaining a high level of service, especially during busy periods. There are times when guests may have complaints or urgent requests that require quick problem-solving and effective communication.
In my previous role, I encountered many such situations, which strengthened my ability to stay calm under pressure, think critically, and work closely with colleagues to deliver excellent guest experiences. These experiences also improved my confidence and professionalism.
Before pursuing my degree, I worked at a renowned hotel in Orchard. I later decided to join Village Hotel Bugis, under Far East Hospitality, to broaden my experience and seek a role that was better aligned with my career goals and professional aspirations.
I am now looking to apply the knowledge gained from both my academic studies and industry experience to continue growing my career in the hospitality industry.
4. What inspired you to pursue the Bachelor of Arts with Honours in International Hospitality and Tourism Management at Coventry University, and in what ways has the programme shaped your professional path?
I have always been interested in the hospitality and tourism industry because it allows me to interact with people from different cultures and create memorable experiences for them. The Bachelor of Arts with Honours in International Hospitality and Tourism Management programme provided me with both theoretical knowledge and practical industry insights. It helped me develop skills in customer service, communication, leadership, and operations management, all of which have prepared me for my current career and future growth in the industry.
5. How did the Career Services team contribute to your development and career readiness during your time as a student?
The Career Services team provided valuable support throughout my studies by organising industry visits, workshops, and career-related events. These activities allowed me to learn more about the hospitality industry, understand employer expectations, and build professional connections. The guidance and opportunities they provided increased my confidence and helped me prepare for the transition from student life to the working world.
6. Could you share a memorable moment from your time at PSB Academy and perhaps influenced your career direction?
One of my most memorable experiences at PSB Academy was participating in industry visits and interacting with professionals who shared their real-life experiences. Hearing about their career journeys and learning about the opportunities available in hospitality motivated me to pursue a career in the industry. It reinforced my passion for guest service and encouraged me to continuously improve myself both academically and professionally.
7. To wrap up, could you share a personal belief or quote that keeps you motivated in both your career and everyday life?
A quote that inspires me is
“Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.” - Julie Andrews
I believe this quote reflects the importance of resilience, determination, and maintaining a positive mindset when facing challenges. In both my academic and professional journeys, setbacks have taught me valuable lessons and motivated me to keep improving. By persevering through difficulties and continuing to learn from my experiences, I can achieve my goals and grow both personally and professionally.
