It’s February, and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Are you looking for a way to make it especially memorable? We’ve got you covered! Here are a few great things you can do on a student’s budget: Your date will surely be moved by all your effort!
1) Say it with code
Does your date have a computer science background? Challenge yourself to write a simple Valentine’s Day message in his/her favourite programming language! While your coding might not be 100% accurate, they’ll definitely appreciate your sincere attempt.
If you’re the one with some computer science knowledge, try coding your date a Valentine’s e-card with HTML and CSS! You can even code them a classic game of Snake, but change the food to hearts instead!
2) Gift your date some one of a kind chocolates
Learnt how to work a 3D printer in an engineering module, or in your own free time? Put this knowledge to good use this Valentine’s Day by making your date a unique sweet treat! Design some funky moulds, 3D print them, and fill them with the chocolate of your choice. You can make the chocolate from scratch with cocoa powder and other ingredients, or use melted chocolate chips if you like.
It might take you a few days of experimenting, but this is one gift that your date will surely remember for weeks to come. If you’re an engineering student with PSB Academy, you can use the 3D printers located at our engineering labs in STEM Campus!
3) Create a meaningful photo essay
Looking for an alternative to a love letter or card? Try putting together a video montage, a collection of images and short video clips that should be able to tell a meaningful story and evoke strong emotions. Decide on a theme or subject—your date or how your date makes you feel, for example—pick up a camera, and start recording. Remember to experiment with different angles and perspectives for a wider variety of shots.
Put everything together with your favourite video editing software and you’ll have a simple but heartfelt gift! If you’re stuck, ask your media and communications friends for help!
4) Invite your date out the unconventional way
If you’re interested in Digital Marketing, you’ve probably heard all about landing pages (a.k.a. a one-page website). Seize the chance; create a witty and light-hearted landing page that you can use to invite your date out (again) for Valentine’s Day! Make the landing page as simple or as elaborate as you like, but don’t forget to include the time and details of your date, plus a way to RSVP. Write engaging copy that makes it hard for your date to say no!
Tip: You can use online tools like Google Sites to make your landing page.
5) Gift some flowers with an added personal touch
Prices for popular blooms tend to hike up during this time of the year, but fear not: You can DIY a bouquet for much cheaper! Supermarkets often offer a decent assortment of blooms that you can purchase and put together. Take it one step further with the help of chemistry by making your own rainbow roses, or creating a preserved arrangement using a glycerine-water solution. Don’t forget to prepare some fresh flower preservatives too—you wouldn’t want to present your date wilted flowers, would you?
Additional Tips
6) Prepare some conversation prompt cards!
If you start to get tongue-tied during a lunch or dinner date, conversation prompt cards can be a fun way to save the day! Prepare a bunch of prompt cards in a drawstring bag, and suggest taking turns drawing out prompts to answer. Favourite drinks of choice and your most used emojis are just two of many interesting topics that you can include.
7) Make your date some sparkly décor!
Why not try your hand at growing a few pretty salt crystal hearts as part of your Valentine’s Day gift? They’re easy to do at home and will look pretty hanging by a window. Here’s a tutorial teaching you how—the only things you’ll need to get are some pretty pipe cleaners from the craft store. The longer you let the crystals grow, the prettier they’ll be!
We hope you’ve found these suggestions useful! Why not try all of them out just for fun by yourself or with your friends, too?
Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at PSB Academy! Spread the love, and cherish one another!
