“Never say no to opportunities!” – Christine

Could you share with us briefly about your current role as Senior Vice President (SVP) Business Development in RL Consultancy?

As SVP of Business Development, my main role is to source for potential prospects, pitch to clients what we offer and maintain good relationship with clients / contacts. In RL consultancy, I often meet up with clients who are interested in our coaching and influencer marketing services. I’m also personally part of the team called “WYAT” where we do daily videos and ask people for their advice. This kind of activities help me increase my awareness of others and allow me to break the ice with new people as well.

Most importantly, I think the role of a business developer is to engage and befriend people, because there are always things to learn from one another, even if they don’t end up being your client or partners. So far, I’ve learnt a lot from other people’s journeys and I’m very happy in this role.

Any challenges faced during your course of work and how do you overcome them?

I think the main challenge is usually prospecting and meeting clients. It’s both exciting and challenging. I enjoy the part where I get to meet new people and have a meal with them but sometimes, it can be a challenge as some people take time to open up. I constantly have to think of topics or ideas to break the ice, especially when there’s awkward silences. So, to prevent that itself is sort of my work challenge.

What do you consider to be your biggest achievement?

I guess my greatest achievement would be being able to balance work and life. I have three children and I’m still able to manage multiple businesses. That itself is a great achievement, although it didn’t come easy. Seeing how things are today really makes me happy and say, “I’ve made it so far!!”

How do you juggle both your work and children at the same time?

It’s really difficult. I have two boys who are still in primary school. So I have to handle them being mischievous but ultimately, I prioritise my children. They always come first no matter what. But on some days, I must admit that I feel stuck. I’d then have to let my kids know what I’m doing and why I can’t be with them all the time. This is when parent effectiveness training comes into play. I learnt to take time to listen to them and try my best to come to a consensus with them.

What career tips would you give to new graduates?

Be bold and believe that you can do so much more than you think. Your capacity can be stretched if you allow it. Also, don’t ever give up and always explore and learn.

In what ways have your education with PSB Academy added value to your personal development and professional opportunities?

PSB Academy has helped me to uncover my “talkative” skills (laughs). Participating in various group projects and interactive activities made me realised that I have a knack for pitching and socialising.

I remember one time I scored high for a particular module when we had to market and sell something. After the presentation, the lecturer was really impressed and complimented me. Not going to lie, I was very happy that day (laughs).
