Kang Minju

Alumni Class of 2025
School of Business and Management

How has life been since you started school?

Since I started at PSB Academy, my life has changed in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I applied as an exchange student from Korea in my final year. It felt risky at the time. A friend encouraged me saying, “Minju, you’ll regret not going abroad just because you think you’re too old. This is the youngest you’ll ever be again.” Her words inspired me to take the leap to Singapore.

I didn’t have a specific reason for choosing Singapore other than it being an English-speaking Asian country. It turned out to be one of my best decisions. At PSB Academy, I became a Student Ambassador. I hosted guests, gave campus tours, promoted the academy, and welcomed new students. Being part of the internal community as an exchange student was an honour. I’ve learnt to value the present and have the courage to choose where I belong.

What made you further your studies with PSB Academy?

I chose PSB Academy because it embraces diversity in a natural and empowering way. People from various backgrounds coexist harmoniously, creating a safe space where students can express themselves freely. This environment allowed me to explore different sides of myself and grow with confidence. At PSB Academy, students are encouraged to engage in activities, express creativity, and take on leadership roles like being a student ambassador.

PSB Academy also values creative, student-centred education. They believe creativity comes not just from hard work, but from an open mind and the freedom to think beyond limits. This philosophy is reflected in the campus design. Open communal spaces like the townhall encourage casual interactions and challenge the rigid structure of traditional schools.

These details foster natural interaction and collaboration. Ultimately, PSB Academy teaches that education is not just about gaining knowledge. It’s about applying it to real-world problems and contributing to society. It’s not a place where everyone competes to survive alone. We grow together as peers. That’s the kind of learning culture I wanted to be part of.

What made you embark on your course / discipline? How will this programme help you to achieve your dreams?

I chose to pursue a Diploma in Media and Communications due to my strong interest in marketing, and this programme aligns with my undergraduate major. It allows me to reinforce and deepen my existing knowledge by reviewing theoretical foundations.

The programme is divided into two main components: theory and practical training. The theoretical part includes courses on media communication, emphasising that the media functions like human conversation. Just as clear communication is crucial in conversations, media must also be intentional and effective. This perspective helps me focus on the purpose of media, no matter the platform or content type.

On the practical side, the programme offers hands-on training tailored to each medium. For example, in Sound Radio Production (SRP), we learn scenario writing, editing techniques, and recording processes specific to podcasts and radio.

The programme also emphasises creativity, encouraging students to express ideas effectively. Many classes are project-based, allowing students to develop original work each semester.

In conclusion, this diploma provides a comprehensive understanding of media, helping me adapt to changing trends.

In what ways has your education with us added value to your personal development and professional opportunities? How have our services help build your character?

The project-based classes at PSB Academy helped me develop strong collaboration skills. One project, a media campaign, challenged me to work with classmates from diverse backgrounds. Through open communication and sharing ideas, we found common ground and created something stronger together. This experience taught me the power of teamwork and how to value different perspectives.

How approachable and helpful were the lecturers/tutors? Was there anyone who motivated you through the challenges of completing your course?

One person who left a lasting impact on me was Mr. Wesly from the Diploma in Media and Communications programme. His classes went beyond sharing knowledge. He gave us tools to think.

Whenever I felt stuck or out of ideas, he reminded us that creativity isn’t just sudden inspiration, but a process. His unique “mind map” method taught us how to grow small ideas, link them, and expand them into new directions. It helped me restart the creative process whenever I hit a wall.

After each class, he always gave us feedback on our projects. His feedback didn’t take away from the originality of our ideas, but rather helped strengthen what we were already doing well.

His guidance helped me grow as a creative thinker. For that, I’m truly grateful.

What was most memorable about your time at PSB Academy?

One of my most memorable experiences at PSB Academy was serving as a guest manager during the Toastmasters event. Toastmasters is a respected platform for developing public speaking skills and has cultural importance in Singapore. Our school hosted the finals, and I helped welcome guests and supported the event.

This experience stood out to me because it reminded me that learning has no age limit. Even fluent English speakers were working hard to express their thoughts more clearly and confidently.

I once asked a professor, “Why do you keep learning even at your age?” He answered, “Knowledge is the foundation of who I am. A strong foundation gives me calm and stability in life. Some people think too much learning is a burden. But the more we know, the more options we have.”

That conversation helped me see how deeply this society values education. It also made me proud to be part of a school that supports lifelong learning.

What advice would you give to other students planning to study here?

I understand that studying abroad requires a lot of courage and effort. Going to a place that is unfamiliar can be intimidating, but I encourage you to start your journey while you’re young! Our identities are much more complicated and diverse than we realise. Instead of trusting only the fixed aspects of yourself, don’t forget that there are undiscovered sides to who you are. PSB Academy’s open and diverse culture will help your journey.
