What made you choose to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Sciences with a double major in Computer Science and Information Technology?
I have always been fascinated by the topic of Information Sciences, as it demonstrates how technology can shape our world and address real-world problems through both theory and hands-on skills. Naturally, the double major in Computer Science and Information Technology allows me to understand both the technical foundations and the practical applications of technology, which I believe is crucial in today's rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Was there a particular moment/experience that sparked your interest in Computer Science & IT?
My interest in IT truly ignited when I started exploring how software and systems could automate complex tasks and improve efficiency. I was particularly drawn to programming and problem-solving and seeing how a few lines of code could create tangible solutions was incredibly rewarding. This hands-on experience made me realise I wanted to pursue a career where I could continuously learn and innovate.
What made you choose Massey University over other institutions?
Massey University stood out because of its strong international reputation and comprehensive curriculum. The programme offered a good balance between academic rigor and industry relevance.
Additionally, the double major option allowed me to specialise in both Computer Science and Information Technology, giving me a broader skill set that would be valuable in the job market.
How has your learning experience been so far? Have you had any chance of working on hands-on or research project?
The learning experience has been challenging yet rewarding. The curriculum is well-structured, progressively building from foundational concepts to more advanced topics. The mix of theoretical lectures and practical assignments has helped me develop a comprehensive understanding of the field. The lecturers are knowledgeable and always willing to provide guidance when needed.
Beyond that, the learning experience has been truly enriching because the course is very hands-on. We have completed numerous practical assignments, lab sessions, and project work throughout the programme. I have worked on several projects ranging from building web applications to developing database systems. These projects often simulate real-world scenarios, requiring us to work in teams, manage timelines, and present our solutions. This practical exposure has been invaluable in bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Which modules do you think you enjoy?
I particularly enjoyed modules related to software engineering, database systems, and networking. These modules taught not just how to code, but how to design scalable maintenance systems. Learning about the software development lifecycle, version control, and collaborative coding practices has been invaluable. These skills are actively sought after by employers, and the course curriculum covers these important aspects thoroughly.
Describe the teaching style and support from lecturers that inspired your learning at PSB Academy.
The lecturers at PSB Academy are experienced professionals who bring industry insights into the classroom. They use a mix of lectures, case studies, and interactive discussions to keep us engaged. What I appreciate most is their accessibility; they are always available during consultation hours and responsive to questions. They encourage critical thinking instead of theoretical learning, which has helped me develop problem-solving skills that extend beyond the classroom.
How is student life on campus?
Student life at PSB Academy is vibrant and diverse. The campus brings together students from various backgrounds and countries, creating a multicultural learning environment. There are plenty of study spaces, both for individual work and group collaborations. The campus facilities are modern and well-equipped, making it conducive for both learning and socialising.
Are there any clubs or activities you have joined outside of class?
While my focus has been primarily on my studies and building my technical skills, I've participated in several tech-related events and workshops organised by the school. These events often feature industry speakers and provide great networking opportunities. I've also been part of study groups where we work together on challenging projects and prepare for exams, which has been both academically beneficial and socially rewarding.
Do you potentially feel more prepared for the industry or future studies after graduation?
Absolutely. The double major has equipped me with a comprehensive skill set that spans both theoretical computer science and practical IT applications. I feel confident in my ability to tackle real-world challenges, whether it's developing software, managing IT infrastructure, or analysing complex systems. The programme has also taught me how to learn independently, which is crucial in a field that constantly evolves.
How has this course shaped your career goals?
This course has clarified my career direction significantly. I started with a broad interest in technology, but through the double major structure and its wide range of modules, I gradually discovered where my strengths and interests lie in software development and systems architecture. The exposure to different areas of IT helped me shaped my career direction and gave me a holistic understanding of how components of an ecosystem work together. It broadened my perspective on what is possible in the field and opened various career paths I had not initially considered. I am looking forward to pursue roles that involve software development and systems architecture.
What is one thing that you've gained personally from this course?
Beyond the technical hard skills like programming, database management, and system design, I've developed strong problem-solving and analytical thinking abilities. The course has taught me how to break down complex problems into manageable components and approach them systematically. I've also improved my time management and self-discipline, especially when juggling multiple assignments and projects. These soft skills are just as valuable as the technical knowledge.
What's the biggest challenge you've overcome while studying at PSB Academy?
The biggest challenge was managing the workload, especially during periods when multiple assignments and exams coincided. Balancing the depth required for a double major while maintaining quality in all my work was demanding. However, this challenge taught me to prioritise effectively, seek help when needed, and develop better study strategies. Overcoming this has made me more resilient and better prepared for the demands of the professional world.
What advice would you give to someone considering Bachelor of Information Sciences?
My advice would be to come in with curiosity and a willingness to learn continuously. Don't be intimidated by the technical aspects because the programme is designed to build your skills progressively. Take advantage of all the practical projects and assignments; they're your opportunity to apply what you learn and build your portfolio. Also, engage with your lecturers and peers, as the collaborative learning environment is one of the programme's greatest strengths. If you're considering a double major, be prepared for a heavier workload, but know that the versatility it provides is worth the effort.
If you could sum up your experience at Massey University in a sentence, what would it be?
Massey University through PSB Academy has provided me with a solid technical foundation and the practical skills needed to thrive in the ever-evolving field of technology, while fostering a learning environment that encourages innovation and critical thinking
