The reason I chose to study the Bachelor of Information Sciences with a Double Major in Computer Science & Information Technology programme at Massey University is because of its nice mix of modules that cover a large span across the IT industry, from Algorithms and Data Structures to User Experience Design and Cloud Computing.
The extensive coverage of modules for this course gave me new insights into how information sciences is an interdisciplinary field that examines how systems, data, and users fit together, rather than focusing on data alone.
The lecturers are approachable and if you need help in any aspect, they provide clear, useful feedback that truly helps you improve and deepen your current understanding of the topics. The campus atmosphere is collaborative, with students often forming small study groups and having quick check-ins with each other before deadlines. Outside of class, I have attended a few tech talks and enrolled in courses that provide soft skills training, as well as networking events to gain industry insights to connect with like-minded individuals. These experiences have helped me make more informed decisions about my career path.
The programme has equipped me for entry-level opportunities and gave me greater clarity about the direction I want to pursue in life. I’ve become more disciplined with problem solving and better at explaining my thought processes behind decisions I made. My biggest challenge was managing multiple project submission deadlines. However, I am grateful to my lecturer for providing me with guidance and tips to manage my time effectively, which helped me complete everything on time.
Some advice that I have for anyone considering the double major degree in Computer Science and IT would be to master the fundamentals. When developing new products or features, avoid overloading them with too many functions and focus on what truly enhances the user experience and delivers meaningful outcomes. The best ideas emerge from simplicity and clarity of purpose. If you are unsure on how to approach a project, ask for feedback early.
To sum up my experience with this course, it has been a rigorous and practical journey that taught me how to build things that matter. The course exposed me to a wide span of the tech landscape, including algorithms and systems design to cloud technologies and user-centred development, which made me understood how data and systems connect. Through the hands-on projects, I can better refine my career direction and learn to create solutions that truly deliver impact.
