Yati Shoon Let Oo

Class of 2020
Diploma in Media And Communications, PSB Academy

School of Business and Management

Since I was young, I have always wanted to be either a fashion designer, musician, editor, director, or architect. The common traits among all these dreams were my love for arts.

The media and entertainment industry has always fascinated me. Hence, I needed the relevant media knowledge to chart out a career. I hope to step foot into the entertainment industry, particularly TV and radio and make a name in showbiz and further my career as a content creator and producer.

Discovering PSB Academy
Before enrolling, I had trouble deciding on a course and a school that I wanted. PSB Academy, however, was a familiar name because I have friends who are alumni, and they spoke positively about the school. After thoroughly researching the different schools and options, I decided to enrol in the media diploma because the modules were aligned with the needs of my future career.

On top of that, the diploma allowed me to progress to a media degree from a top university. All these were explained to me during the consultation, and the friendly guided me throughout my application process. Overall, I felt welcome to this institution compared to others.

Learning Journey with PSB Academy
My learning journey has been excellent and satisfactory. I have to take about 3 to 4 modules per term, and the timetable was well spread out, which gave me ample time to do my assignments and revise.

The constant guidance from our friendly lecturers made learning easier. If I have questions regarding the lectures, assignments, or final exam, I could always approach them for a 1-to-1 consultation. In particular, Mr Aaron Rao has been very patient and caring. I still remember how our class had trouble writing our first ever 2500-word essay on the topic of Fake News. We bombarded him with questions, and the next day, he prepared an essay starter pack with information related to our topic. It was a lifesaver. He always seems to remember everyone as he greets us with a smile whenever we bumped into each other.

The assignments that I had to work on were pretty interesting as well. In one of the group assignments for Principles of Journalism, we had to write an article about K-pop. We interviewed Ferlyn Wong, a former member of a K-pop group called SKarf, one of the two Singaporeans. Although it was only an email interview, it was an excellent opportunity to get to know her better. This is probably one of the memories I will remember for a long time.

Skills and Knowledge Acquired
Not only did I learn about the fundamentals of Filmmaking and Journalism, but I also studied the ideology of Media Studies, Business ethics, and Marketing. I acquired industry insights and technical skills from this course.

The knowledge that I found most valuable was Media Literacy. I used to consume media on the surface level, but I can now dissect the media content and critically analyse them.

Besides the technical skills, I have also gained various soft skills such as Effective Communication, Teamwork, Leadership, and Problem-solving. I used to have difficulties working in a group because I’m soft-spoken and dislike public speaking. But over time, the course helped me to overcome my fear of approaching people. Now, I work well independently and with a team. I have been using my improved communication skills and knowledge from the media literacy module in my daily life.
