Phase 1

Candidates work to create the foundation of their DBA, establishing the context, research questions (via a literature review) and methodology. Phase 1 is typically concluded in 12 to 24 months. Successful completion of Phase 1 involves submitting a draft literature review chapter (up to 10,000 words), a draft methodology chapter (up to 10,000 words) and a critical reflection document from the candidate about their personal and professional development (up to 3,000 words).

During the first year of the DBA, candidates are required to attend a series of five workshops. The objective of these workshops is to provide the candidates with a baseline of skills and knowledge that helps them progress in their DBA.

Phase 2

Candidates conduct empirical research, organised in one to four practice-based projects, to be determined by the candidate and Director of Studies. The findings for each of these projects are then typically written as individual chapters which together should total up to 32,000 words.

Candidates must also submit a second critical reflection document (up to 7,000 words) of their personal and professional development in time for PRP 3. Phase 2 is complete when the candidate has passed PRP, usually taking 24 to 36 months.

Phase 3

Candidates assemble their thesis. This phase is typically completed in 12 months and may not require an MPR to be convened. If a review is required (MPR 3), candidates are asked to submit a final critical reflection chapter of their work (no more than 15,000 words long), and any substantial changes they will have made to the previously reviewed chapters.

May and September

Upon successful completion of all required modules, students will be awarded the Doctor of Business Administration from Coventry University. The degree awarded will be the same as that to the on-campus graduates.

Maximum Candidature: The maximum candidature period for all candidates is 84 months (7 years).

• A postgraduate master’s degree with merit or above, or with a minimum overall average mark of 60% or above, in a relevant discipline/subject area and a minimum mark of 60% in the project element or equivalent; OR
• A first or upper second class honours degree in a relevant discipline/subject area, or an approved equivalent award, with a minimum mark of 60% in the project element or equivalent; OR
• Appropriate research or professional experience at postgraduate level, which has resulted in published work, written reports or other appropriate evidence of achievement

Additional requirements are that candidates:

• have a minimum of five years’ practitioner experience in a relevant field;
• are undertaking a role within an appropriate setting that will allow the implementation of innovation and change necessary to meet the requirements of the programme;
• have an identified mentor who is an experienced practitioner in a relevant field.

Minimum Age Requirement: 25 years old

• IELTS Academic or IELTS for UKVI (Academic) demonstrating achievement of an overall score of 7.0 or above with a minimum of 6.5 in each of the four sections (or equivalent); OR
• TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition (Online) demonstrating achievement of an overall score of 95 or higher with no section below 21 (or equivalent); OR
• Ability to demonstrate a level of English Language proficiency required to undertake the programme and assessed internally within the institution following documented procedure.
