Could you share with us about your current role as a Corporate Intern at Ketchum?

As a Corporate Intern, I assist with a series of marketing and corporate communications tactics for our client in the mainland Chinese market. The job scope ranges from media monitoring, managing media relations, feature writing, weekly and bi-weekly report drafting, to ad-hoc translation tasks, data cleaning, research and brainstorming etc. Through this opportunity, I get to experience a real work environment and the actual workflow in a big Public Relations (PR) consultancy, which will certainly help me make more accurate decisions for future job-hunting.

Why is Singapore your choice for further studies?

First of all, it was because of my long-term passion for English, communications and art. There were very few universities in China that offer up-to-date communications courses with a focus on corporate/marketing communications. Singapore became a choice of mine considering its international influence as a first-class Asian country, clean and safe environment, fun and interesting diverse culture, as well as rich educational resources.

You were President of Photography Club and participated in a few other student clubs and activities. What motivated you and what are your greatest takeaways?

I would say the motivation mostly came from myself, friends that are close to me, and my club mentor. Before joining the student club, I used to be a very shy person. I was afraid to speak to strangers, such as asking for directions, and didn’t know how to expand my network actively. I simply wanted to change my mentality by taking up a leadership role in a student club to challenge myself, and to interact more with the local people and culture.

I felt very lucky because my friends and club mentor gave me a lot of support; they believed I could pull through even when I didn’t. I guess my greatest takeaway from participating in extracurricular activities would be the improved understanding towards teamwork, especially with people of diverse culture and knowledge background. This was a great help in my group assignments too.

In what ways has your education at PSB Academy added value to your career and personal development?

The courses I took at PSB Academy taught me to take initiative to make plans and self-learn a new subject, concept or whatever it is. The most headache but also my favourite part of the education experience at PSB Academy was the group work. Through all those tough experiences , I learnt how to stay calm while remaining focused and effective no matter what happens in a team. The friends I made at PSB Academy are also something I will treasure my whole life.

From a career perspective, I would say that the Bachelor of Communication programme offered by  The University of Newcastle, Australia at PSB Academy is able to capture the sharp insights, trends, and priorities that are ongoing in the industry and job market. With this degree, I feel much equipped in terms of industry knowledge, career route planning, and reachability to different possibilities in the job-hunting process.
