Min Htet Soe

Class of 2021
Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Coventry University

School of Engineering and Technology

My name is Min Htet Soe and I’m from Myanmar. Growing up, I have always wanted to be an engineer. For that reason, I tried my best to do well during my school and university years. Apart from engineering, I love working out and gaming in my spare time.

I chose to study engineering because I have been obsessed with machines, how they work, and how they are made. As I grew up, I become fond of electronic devices. Thus, I realized electrical and electronic engineering is my passion.

MY ACADEMIC JOURNEY

The Certificate in Engineering Foundation course from PSB Academy helped me to develop strong fundamental skills an engineer needs – especially when it came to the laws of applied physics and mathematics in engineering, and communication skills. Mastering these skills enabled me to progress onto the diploma level.

The Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology course further improved my knowledge and understanding of circuitries and power system, and my passion on electrical and electronics. These core skills and knowledge acquired from the foundation and diploma courses by PSB Academy helped me to transition into my degree course without much struggle.

UPS AND DOWNS

The biggest challenged I faced during my education journey would be during my degree course – the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering awarded by Coventry University. Tightened measures taken due to the pandemic between 2020-2021 greatly affected my mental health while pursuing my degree. Physical classes were reduced, and laboratory classes were not as frequent as before. I had a lot of self-doubt. I questioned if I could finish my degree during these hard times. The countermeasures taken by the school with online classes and safety regulations implemented once campus reopened helped me get through my degree.

My favourite experience during my journey was meeting new people; lecturers, colleagues, engineers, etc. With these great people, we exchanged ideas and shared inspiration. My favourite module was Individual Project realization (IPR) because it allowed me to turn my engineering ideas into a real-life project. There was a lot of preparation involved before realizing the project. Moreover, the challenges I faced during the realization of the project forced me to come up with solutions which prepared me in taking up the challenges I would face in my career.

I would like to specially mention my lecturers Dr. Lim Chong Lye, Dr. Bala Murugan, Mr. Syafiq Shahul and Miss Sarina Tajudin. These people greatly motivated and inspired me, helping me turn my engineering dreams into reality.

STARTING MY FIRST JOB

Upon graduation, I was job hunting with the focus on jobs with an electrical design engineering job scope, an ideal starting point for fresh graduates. I was initially worried that there would not be many opportunities available. After seeing my peers getting their first jobs, I realized that I just had to chase harder. Every morning I would send out about 20 applications. It wasn’t long until interviews and offers started rolling in.

I started my first job at Nutek Pte Ltd at the end of 2021 as a design engineer. Currently, I am working for Toshiba TEC Singapore as an electrical engineer in design engineering division. My current goal is gain experience doing my company’s projects and gain a mastery of all sides of a project from beginning to end. I aim to eventually be the lead engineer who can successfully bring these large projects to life.

TO ASPIRING ENGINEERS

I want to tell my fellow engineering students to believe in themselves until the end. The academic years could be hard but with the right people, classmates or lecturers, it can be easier. To fresh graduates, the opportunities are out there. They just need to go after it and that they too can start their career successfully. Surround yourself with people that inspire and motivate you, and bring them along for your journey. You will be surprised how they would bring you along too.
