Tan Chin Han, John

Class of 2027
School of Business and Management

My decision to pursue a Professional Doctorate in Business Administration (Research) with the University of Canberra at PSB Academy was driven by a clear intention to connect my commercial experience with academic inquiry. With over thirty years in the aviation technology sector across the Asia-Pacific region, I sought a programme that would challenge me intellectually while remaining grounded in professional relevance. The University of Canberra’s emphasis on applied research, supported by PSB Academy’s strong academic facilitation, provided an ideal environment for this pursuit. The experience has been both demanding and intellectually enriching.

My research explores how organisational and human factors shape the strategic integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into airline Global Distribution Systems (GDS), with the aim of enhancing inventory control and customer experience in Singapore’s aviation sector. As a recognised aviation hub, Singapore is undergoing rapid digital transformation amidst regulatory complexity. While many studies examine the technical or consumer aspects of AI, few investigate the internal drivers that influence strategic adoption. This study addresses that gap. It is grounded in Upper Echelons Theory (UET) and the Technology–Organisation–Environment (TOE) framework, offering both theoretical insights and practical frameworks for AI implementation in highly regulated service environments.

I currently lecture in the Aviation Management degree programme at an Autonomous University in Singapore, where I teach, mentor undergraduates, conduct research, and collaborate with industry partners. The doctorate has broadened my academic lens and enhanced my ability to engage students in critical inquiry. It has also enabled deeper involvement in curriculum enhancement and policy discussions on aviation innovation.

Receiving the Dean’s Excellence Award for Semester 1, 2025 was a meaningful recognition. It reflected purposeful planning, consistent reading, critical analysis of academic texts and ongoing dialogue with my supervisory board. Each assignment was an opportunity to connect theory with practice. Regular feedback sessions with my supervisors were instrumental in maintaining academic rigour and reflective depth.

This recognition has affirmed my commitment to academic excellence and strengthened my professional credibility. It has opened new opportunities in academic engagement and thought leadership. More importantly, it reflects the value of lifelong learning and demonstrates how working professionals can thrive in demanding research environments.

To fellow students, I offer this perspective: cultivate discipline, stay rooted in your motivation, and value the process of critical reflection. The support from PSB Academy and the University of Canberra is robust and responsive. A doctoral journey is not without its challenges, but it remains one of the most rewarding paths for personal and professional growth.
