Siblings Inspired to Achieve Their Education Goals

Posted on: 08th June, 2021

“It all runs in the family”, as a saying goes. This is true for sisters Jenna and Edna Loh, as they share something in common in terms of pursuing higher education in the same school, albeit at different times. What inspired them to do so?

“I have had a strong interest in life sciences since young,” said Jenna, 23, who is studying Foundation Diploma in Life Sciences (FDLS). “I decided to study life sciences for higher education after working for a few years in the engineering sector. As I did not have any prior experience with life sciences, the FDLS course serves as a bridge for me to eventually pursue a degree in life sciences at La Trobe University.” After graduating, Jenna hoped to be able to work in a laboratory or do research in her future career.

“So far, the curriculum is at a good pace,” she added. “The blended learning enables us to learn independently, and the recorded lecture videos also allow me to learn at my own pace. Most of the lecturers are very friendly and helpful. Dr Charles and Dr Jimmy always try to engage with students, and they also encourage the students to do self-learning.”

Interestingly, Jenna came to know about PSB Academy from her sister Edna, 24, who is an alumna. Edna had studied for Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management in PSB Academy back in 2017 because she wanted to have a brighter future for herself.

Edna had fond memories of her time studying full-time in PSB Academy. She recounted, “I was fortunate to have good teachers whom we could communicate well with. They were also passionate in educating us about the trade through their personal experiences. Throughout my time there, I had the chance to study and work with many friendly classmates.”

Hence, when Edna came to learn about her sister Jenna’s plans to further her studies, she introduced PSB Academy to her and shared about her own school experience. It helped Jenna to feel slightly more at ease to join the school, as she was able to ask Edna about the school’s culture and structure.

Jenna recalled, “My sister mentioned that she had met many classmates turned friends from all walks of life, and it was a memorable part of her studies with PSB Academy. I came to know that PSB Academy has a well-established STEM Campus, and the courses available were in my field of interest. I was impressed with the science labs and facilities available via the videos on PSB Academy’s website and decided to sign up for their course.”

“I also benefited from the family discount offered by PSB Academy,” she added. “The family rebates are quite good and reasonable, which will encourage siblings or family members to study at PSB Academy. The family discount has helped us financially.”

Besides Jenna and Edna Loh, another pair of siblings have found it beneficial to pursue higher education in the same school. Both Shawn and Dion Lim have enrolled into the Master of Business Administration in Global Business with Coventry University at PSB Academy. Shawn and Dion Lim were eligible for the family discount, but received a higher value study grant due to a course promotion.

“I decided to pursue my Master’s degree to enhance my professional credibility,” said Shawn, 31. “I wanted to develop management skills before taking on a leadership position. I hope this programme will equip me with the knowledge and ability to work better in a diverse environment. I also hope to have a management perspective and skills to value-add my competitive advantage in this rapidly changing world.”

As for his brother, Dion, 34, he is a business owner who seeks knowledge to enhance his management and business skills. He said, “I wish to apply my knowledge gained from the programme to make impactful strategies and policies to my organisation. I also want to be part of the school’s alumni for future business networking.”

Shawn favoured the practical way of learning in PSB Academy as it is relevant to real-world application for the future. He said, “I like the curriculum because it provides a holistic approach in preparing leaders for the future.”

For Dion, he was attracted to PSB Academy’s course fees and convenient location of the city campus, and he also found its programme schedule perfect for working professionals. He said, “I like how the programme is delivered in world-class classrooms and lecture theatres with modern technology used for teaching, without us needing to print notes or purchasing textbooks.”

As for how the siblings have found it beneficial to study in the same school, Shawn said, “MBA is not a walk in the park. Studying together helps to ease the challenges faced, as we can constantly encourage and motivate each other.” Agreeing, Dion added, “I have a buddy right from the first day. It is a great start to a new adventure, which excites and motivates you to complete the course together.

It is heartening to see how both pairs of siblings — Jenna and Edna Loh as well as Shawn and Dion Lim —  have supported one another in their learning journey at PSB Academy.
